ERIC Letter to HHS Urging Adoption of Standardized Hospital Patient Survey

The ERISA Industry Committee on February 20 lent its support to the quick adoption of the standard hospital patient survey tool that was developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS had planned to implement a 32 question survey that would gather and publish data on patient satisfaction with specific hospitals. The survey has come under attack from commercial survey vendors who oppose the use of a standard tool to provide health care consumers with publicly reported comparative information on hospital stays.

In a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson, ERIC urged the Secretary to remain committed to publishing the survey, despite stiffening resistance from parts of the hospital industry to drastically shorten the patient experience survey.
