Employers Urge Congress to Pass Health Care Legislation for a More Competitive and Transparent Market

Washington, D.C., June 10, 2024 – A diverse collection of organizations representing the nation’s employers who are dedicated to bringing more transparency and accountability to health care for employers and their employees, calls on Congress to enact meaningful pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) and health care reform legislation this year. The organizations include The ERISA Industry Committee (ERIC), Purchaser Business Group on Health (PBGH), American Benefits Council, National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions, Silicon Valley Employers Forum, HR Policy Association, Business Group on Health, and the Small Business Majority.

Transparency and accountability across the health care system are needed and imperative to enable employers to continue to provide affordable access to health care for American employees and their families. That accountability must include all stakeholders with whom our member companies – the foundation of the employer-sponsored coverage system – contract.

We applaud the work of House and Senate committee leaders in raising and engaging in robust dialogue, particularly on the policies considered in H.R. 5378, the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act and S. 1339, the Pharmacy Benefit Manager Reform Act to develop appropriate reforms that support employer-sponsored coverage, drive innovation, and promote competition and fair dealing. As employers prepare for 2025 and again attempt to rein in unsustainable cost trends which threaten program integrity and affordability, legislation that supports their ability to do so by appropriately driving competition, transparency, and fair dealing is increasingly urgent. We strongly urge Congress to continue with these efforts and help employers provide vital, affordable health benefits and programs to employees and their families by passing meaningful reforms this year.
